What’s Coming Soon in SAM.gov

In the past few weeks, we’ve been telling you about recent updates from 2021 you can read about here, here, and here, as well as some updates about Wage Determinations and Exclusions.  Now, let’s talk about what’s coming in the future:

In this blog, you’ll find information on the following updates:

  • CAGE Code requirements change for some entities
  • New medical category coming soon
  • System maintenance reminder
  • Now calling testers!

CAGE Code requirements change for some entities: As of October 21, 2021, some entities will no longer be assigned a CAGE code at registration, per the Office of Management and Budget and the Office of Federal Financial Management.

Criteria for no longer receiving a CAGE Code:

1. If the purpose of your entity registration is to access Financial Assistance Only (Z1), and  the country of your entity’s physical address is the United States, you will not need a CAGE Code.

2. If you meet one of the following criteria you will still need a CAGE code: You are a Federal Government

(2R); State Government (2F); Local Government (12); Tribal Government (3I); Foreign Government (CY);

Foreign Owned (20); Manufacturer of Goods (MF); or Educational Institution (M8). If your entity falls into

one of these listed business types, you must still have a CAGE Code to register.

It’s important for you to know that individual registrants cannot elect to opt in or out of CAGE Code assignment/validation. The SAM.gov website will evaluate based on the above criteria and if the system identifies you meet criteria to be exempt from a code, the field will be empty.

If you manage systems that ingest SAM.gov data, be aware that the CAGE Code field in any extracts will show as blank for any entities that SAM.gov determines to meet this criteria.

For your awareness, the expected SAM.gov registration processing time, including assigning the CAGE Code where necessary, is ten (10) business days. Entities that meet the above criteria for CAGE Code exemption have an expected SAM.gov registration processing time of three (3) business days.

Questions about DLA CAGE Code assignment can be directed to: cage.dla.mil.

New medical category coming soon: On October 30, 2021, a new medical category Product Service Code (PSC) 6632 Analysis Instruments, Medical Laboratory Use will appear in the public PSC API; SAM.gov displays and data entry; and FPDS. Acquisition.gov will update the manual and category alignment documents to reflect this addition.

System maintenance reminder: As a reminder SAM.gov has planned downtime for regular system maintenance on the following schedule:

Maintenance Event

Dates/Times

SAM.gov Maintenance Downtime

Remember, you can always find the latest enhancements at fsd.gov. Use the search bar to search for “Release Notes.”

Now calling testers! Share your thoughts on SAM.gov and see what’s being enhanced. Your input is the best way for us to know how SAM.gov is working!  Please continue to use the feedback tool (found at the bottom of every page of SAM.gov) to let us know what you like and how we can improve the system for you. Note: if you have a technical problem that is keeping you from using the site, it’s best for you to use the FSD helpdesk to open a ticket (the SAM.gov feedback tool is anonymous; and we  don’t have a way to investigate complex concerns that are reported in the feedback tool without details from an FSD ticket).

You can now sign up to test features of the site during usability and alpha testing. 85 federal and non-federal SAM.gov users just like you have participated in SAM.gov tests over the last several months.  The feedback we received will continue to be incorporated into upcoming releases.
