Greenwashing also occurs when a company focuses on one or two aspects of a product or the manufacturing process but other aspects of the product or the manufacturing process can still be harmful to human health or the environment.

Greenwashing is best described as disinformation disseminated by organizations to present an environmentally responsible public image.

I challenge everyone to also take a broader look how green washing can create confusion for consumers. For instance, everyone agrees that compact fluorescent light bulbs are a "green" product?Maybe.Indeed, they use less energy than an...Read More

The government can set up "green" projects that many people can take part in. With people coming together for a specific purpose it is possible that they will be opened up to other goals, methods of living, and ways of thinking. Many citizens...Read More

The federal government has been benefitting in many ways, ranging from reduced operating expenses when we use energy efficient and water efficient products, reduced fuel costs when we use alternative fuel vehicles, and reduced waste disposal costs.

What does "going green" mean to you and how can the government help create true awareness about the concept rather than generate superficial buzz around the term itself?

What makes a purchase "sustainable"? In the Federal Acquisition Service, we have been piloting the introduction of sustainability considerations into our procurements, particularly into the Federal Strategic Sourcing Initiative solutions. In addition to green product requirements, we've been looking at distribution networks, product takeback, and packaging reduction.

Do you have ideas on how to support federal climate change adaptation activities? GSA wants to hear from you.  GSA issued a Request for Information (RFI) to evaluate the emerging marketplace for services to support federal climate change adaptation activities. This RFI will help GSA gather information to determine what actions are needed to ensure climate change adaptation services are readily available for its customers.

GSA is still evaluating Schedule 75 to determine if it is in the best interest of the Government to either re-open or maintain the current status.  A final decision will be published in FED BizOps within the next two weeks.
    JLEE
After review and careful consideration, it has been determined Schedule 75 will remain closed to new offers for an additional 12 months. The Schedule will re-open effective October 1, 2013 and new offers will be accepted at that time.

I'd like to see a software tool or other iterative decision making tool to walk a CO through - "I have xyz requirement, whatsustainability issues should be considered, what green elements or standards should be in the SOW/specifications and which contract clause are to be included.  Or is there one out there in the universe of green information?

Our company has recently completed 5 projects for DOD through the DLA Disposition Services.   We have repurposed over 3500 office furniture workstations into the commercial used furniture market.  This resulted in reducing landfill volume by over 10,000 cubic yards.  In addition we saved the agencies well over $3 mil in disposition expenses.   Our process is about as green as it gets, and is an absolute win-win for the agency and the environment.  Is anyone aware of other similar initiatives like this underway in non DOD agencies?
