Discussion | BMO Small Businesses: Tell us about typical territories/service areas

Based on preliminary discussions, GSA has surmised that many BMO services can only be cost-effectively performed within a certain radius of the vendor's location. We would like to get more specific information about the typical territories/service areas for small business service providers, so this week’s question is specifically aimed at small businesses. 

Q. What is a typical geographic territory size that your small business can cover? Based on workforce size and other factors, is your company’s service area focused on single metro area(s) or do you have a multi-state territory, etc.? Is your service area dependent on the type of services you offer (e.g. does General Mechanical services tend to encompass a larger coverage area than Janitorial services)?

<p>Our Company, C&amp;W-TESCO, Inc. provides HVAC Commissioning as well as Testing, Adjusting and Balancing. &nbsp;Our home office is located just outside of Richmond, VA. &nbsp;We cover projects usually within a 250 mile radius which covers all of the state of Virginia. &nbsp;Our coverage area can be expanded to Maryland and North Carolina depending on project type and size.</p>

<p>Good Afternoon, Service-Tech Corporation provides specialized Industrial Cleaning, HVAC System/Ductwork Cleaning and Kitchen Exhaust System Cleaning to many Federal Customers in the contiguous 48, many, but not all are GAS contract projects.&nbsp; Each of our 4 regional offices are assigned multi-state territories so geographic territoy is not a big issue.&nbsp; The only issue is cost effectiveness.&nbsp; We may choose not to bid on a job if the travel involved would mean we could not be competative, so it&#39;s not really the type of service, but the size of the project that is the factor in the decision to bid. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>
<p>Good morning,</p><p>The McHenry Management Group (TMMG) is a Veteran-Owned Small Business (VOSB). We assist organizations with virtually any engineering, logistics, or program development challenge. Most related to BMO, we provide services supporting systems acquisition, sustainment, and end-of service life; configuration management; maintenance engineering; policy making; process engineering; project management; and business planning. We travel world-wide to support our customers, but our primary geographic areas are the DC metro area; Baltimore, MD; Hampton Roads, VA; San Francisco and San Diego, CA.</p><p>We appreciate the opportunity to provide feedback to your questions.</p>
<p>Our company, Ben Fitzgerald Real Estate Services, LLC dba Rosemark performs facility maintenance services, operations and maintenence services, custodial services, and other related Government contract services.&nbsp; Our company has performed these services over the past 19 years in the following 18 states; Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Washington, DC, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Louisiana, Maine, Michigan, New Mexico, New York, Oklahoma, Ohio, Texas and Vermont.</p><p>This reflects work performed from &quot;coast to coast&quot;.&nbsp; There is absolutely no reason that a small company cannot have the same geographic coverage as a large company.</p><p>To answer your specfic questions:</p><p>Q:&nbsp; What is the typical geographic terrioy size that your small business can cover?&nbsp;</p><p>Answer:&nbsp; All states and territories within the US.&nbsp; We have also bid solicitations in Japan.</p><p>Q:&nbsp; Based on workforce size and other factors, is your company&#39;s service area focused on single metro area(s) or do you have a multi-state territory?&nbsp;</p><p>Answe:&nbsp; As mentioned above our company does not focus on single metro areas.&nbsp; We focus on the entire US and its territories.</p><p>Q:&nbsp; Is your service area dependent on the type of services you offer (e.g. does General Mechanical services tend to encompass a larger coverage area than Janitorial services)?</p><p>Answer:&nbsp; The service area is not dependent on the type of sevices to be offered.&nbsp; No difference between the types of services&nbsp;and geographic areas.&nbsp; The size and scope of services to be offerd are a determining factor - not&nbsp;geographic service locations.</p><p>&nbsp;</p>

<p>Logo Mat Central is a company specializing in selling Custom Made Floor Mats of all types. Most times we are able to determine the project requirements via phone. However, In the event that a customer requires an on-site evaluation, we will usually travel up to 150 miles from our headquarters in Cedar Grove, NJ. That typically encompasses New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania &amp; Connecticut. On occasion for larger installs we have traveled even further. For instances where we are unable to be on-site we utilize a nationwide network of professional installers who are able to provide a client with proper measurements &amp; customized installation. The Veterans Affairs Administration building in Kansas City Missouri is one such example of a job where we utilized our installers. Prior to evaluating specifications, we begin the process by physically mailing out samples of our products. In this way our clients are able to understand which product or colors will best suit their particular needs. <p>Good Morning, our company Infinity Technology Consulting, Inc. is a IT Managed Services Provider specialized in helping government entities implement sound IT solutions. We are located in Atlanta, Georgia and our base is roughly about 100-150 miles. Our services area is focused on the metro Atlanta area but we have done projects out of state with the help of other partners. More times than most it is harder to focus on those deals because they strain resources, have increased corporate, financial and tax liability, require recruiting talent that is willing to work in a remote location, or partnering with a larger companies. Our services have no geographical boundaries as skilled IT Managed Services is currently in high demand.</p>
<p>Spot Cooling Systems sells portable air conditioning units throughout the world.&nbsp; Our rental business for Spot Coolers is based in Texas and we have agreements with&nbsp;similar companies across the USA to provide temporary, portable or supplemental cooling for offices, hospitals, computer/server rooms and outdoor events.&nbsp; We are a&nbsp;Small Business.&nbsp; <a href="http://www.extracooler.com">www.extracooler.com</a></p>
<p>Rowe can provide O &amp; M, Custodial and other related services throughout the US and overseas. We currently have contracts as a small business in Germany and England providing&nbsp;these services to the US Government. We currently don&#39;t have any GSA contracts, but have had many in the past. Geopraphic locations really don&#39; t matter in the decision process to bid on any particular soliciation. What matter is the size and scope of the project. The bigger the size of the project, those costs (travel and overhead) are a much smaller percentage of the overall price than for a smaller contract. What matters is to be competitve and make a profit.</p>
<p>Aquasure does indeed have a limited geographical territory. &nbsp;This is about 100-150 mile radius of our company headquarters. &nbsp;this facilitates service accessibility, timeliness of response and logistics.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Goff Engineering &amp; Surveying, Inc. typically responds to solicitations in our geographic area (approximately a radius of 8 hours drive time from our main office) if they require personnel to be onsite.&nbsp; We primarly work in CO, AZ, NM, and UT. We cannot be competitive with local companies if we have to include travel costs.&nbsp; We have found firms who offer our same services often hire a local person to be onsite and thus reduce overhead costs.&nbsp; If the project does not require a staff member to be onsite to collect data or observe, we would consider working outside of our geographic area.</p>
<p align="left">Native American Technology Corporation, a small disadvantaged, women owned business can provide facility operations and maintenance services nationwide. It is true that O&amp;M services can be more cost effective if the vendor is geographically close to the place of performance but we strongly recommend you not limit vendors from responding to opportunities only if they are located within a specific radius of the work. A local office or base of operations can be easily established post award so restricting vendors geographically would unnecessarily restrict competition.</p><p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>My company, Awnclean U.S.A. provides cleaning services such as&nbsp;pressure cleaning, window cleaning,&nbsp; cleaning of roofs and canopies, tile &amp; grout cleaning,, and more. We are located in Tampa, Florida and offer primarily statewide service although we will send teams out of state if the size of the project warrants it. For example, pressure cleaning of multiple buildings or parking garages would be worth traveling for; cleaning of one small building or awning would not unless it can be grouped with other work. <p>Typically our company Flexible Lifeline Systems&nbsp;covers the North American market providing fall protection systems, building maintenance equipment systems, including inspections and certifications in accordance with OSHA and ANSI.</p><p>We are a complete turnkey operation of fall protection systems in North America and some International areas. We send out installers to projects world wide to install, service and/or certify each system that is design and&nbsp;manufactured at&nbsp;our production facility is located in the Southern Territory of North America in Houston, Texas.</p>
<p>GreenEfficient is a small business and can service throughout the United States with a full complement of services. Dividing the work into 3-5 state regions for the smaller states makes a ton of sense. For larger states, such as Texas, Colorado and California, division into metropolitan areas is most advantageous from a cost standpoint. The larger number of buildings confined to a tighter geogarpahic area lend to a lower risk because it requires fewer managers (best of the best managers hired). Larger geographies with fewer buildings requires more managers (with less responsibility) and therefore diluted management personel capability.&nbsp;</p><p>www.greenefficient.com&nbsp;</p>
<p>Our firm can provide O&amp;M and or Custodial and related services throughout the continental United States. We currently successfully service GSA contracts in fifteen (15) states, so geographical seperation is not in and of itself a factor that precludes us from bidding any particular solicitation. &nbsp;Whether or not we bid on any given solicitation is determined more by the size and scope of the project rather than its location. When determining the price at which we can service a contract, we must necessarily factor in the travel and operational costs to put personnel on site to complete contract transition, perform training and to conduct periodic quality control or other visits that may be required. Those costs may be minor for a large project when compared to the overall bid price, but for a small project they can make a bid price non-competetive when compared to a more local firm&#39;s bid.</p><p>Our bottom Line as to whether we choose to bid a project is always determined by whether we can offer the government a competetive price, be able to properly service the contract and make a reasonable profit.</p>

<p>Hello, our company, archSCAN, LLC, goes on-site and organizes building documents. &nbsp;We clean up plan rooms and create a database of what it there. &nbsp;Then we provide on and off-site scanning services. &nbsp;All on-site work is done strictly in the Mid-Atlantic Region covering PA, MD, DE, DC, and VA. &nbsp; &nbsp;We try to stay within a two hour driving distance or 100 mile radius. &nbsp;Off-site scanning services can be provided to clients all over the country as long as they can ship their documents to us. &nbsp;We can sort, organize, and scan documents in our production facility located in Glen Burnie, MD. &nbsp;</p><p>I hope this helps!</p>
