What makes a purchase "sustainable"? In the Federal Acquisition Service, we have been piloting the introduction of sustainability considerations into our procurements, particularly into the Federal Strategic Sourcing Initiative solutions. In addition to green product requirements, we've been looking at distribution networks, product takeback, and packaging reduction.

From time to time, we receive inquiries about green purchasing training for contractors. Most of the training courses are designed for the federal contracting and program management community. However, as part of the Multiple Award Schedule series of webinars, GSA is offering training for contractors. Please monitor the announcements about the MAS webinars. With GSA including environmental considerations in more contract solicitations every year, we’re sharing new training to help vendors reduce energy costs, protect the environment, and increase their competitiveness in winning GSA contracts. The training focuses on easy steps vendors can take to reduce their energy costs and associated greenhouse gas pollution, which causes global warming. GSA recognizes our obligation to safeguard America’s future by purchasing products and services that minimize our impact on the environment.

Lots of great input both on and off Interact - thank you. Liking techtarget.com v. the "pedia" portals. Thank you and I encourage more input.

After considerable review and thought, we are leaning toward the techtarget.com source. Frankly it offers the most useful information and seems clear. Gartner does not cover specific technologies in the glossary. Would anyone object to the use of this...Read More

When you ask "how can the government objectively measure innovation?" are you asking about cost savings?

@Smorris: Thank you for your question.  We're open to your interpretation of innovation and more interested in how innovation can be measured objectively.

I'm sure many of the sources offered by others will be very helpful.  While this is a long-shot, I was involved with an ISO (International Standards Organization) Committee on Nanotechnology a few years ago.  And there were many discussions...Read More

Thank you all for you continued feedback and input.  As we move toward our announced industry day on November 3rd, your comments help us greatly as we clarify and codify the message.  In that spirit, we have reconsidered our "Critical Technology" approach and elements.

Hope this post finds everyone well (or at least tolerating) and would ask that you consider our next area of research required to form the Alliant 2 family of contracts. This post will address the emerging trends associated with information technology and contract inclusions required to ensure the new Alliant family is market focused and capable of offering solutions to agencies for many years to come.
