Identity and Access Management (IAM) Updates

As you no doubt have read and followed in previous articles in this space, the Integrated Award Environment (IAE) is in the midst of an Agile, multi-release build of what we call “the new SAM.gov” in our effort to modernize the 10 IAE systems that exist today.

We accomplished several Identity and Access Management (IAM) updates in Release 6 which concludes in July. These updates lay the foundation for registration, login capability, and role migration. IAM capabilities are being designed to ease the transition to the new SAM.gov platform.

Registration

Since the new platform offers a Single-Sign-On (SSO) capability, we need users to register and create their identity, i.e. user account. The registration process should take a couple of minutes to complete. For most users, their legacy systems roles will be migrated forward into the new platform.

Login Capability

Once a user registers, the new identity will be used to provide a SSO login capability. SSO allows users to sign in to the platform once, then access any of the applications (in accordance with their roles) on the new platform without signing in again.

Role Migration

Role migration describes the process of carrying forward user roles from the current IAE systems. For example, when a user who currently has the role of Agency Coordinator in CFDA creates their user account in the new SAM.gov, the Identity and Access Management Tool will take that legacy role and carry it forward so the user will not have to re-request the role. This role migration process is expected to work for most users. We will explain any exceptions in further detail in future communications.

While these updates and upcoming transition to the new SAM.gov will require users to re-register, test users for the new CFDA and FBO will be able to complete registration at the time of testing, and will not have to do it again. Also, we are researching options to provide CAC/PIV support and hope to begin development shortly.
