Enterprise Infrastructure Solutions (EIS) Microsoft (MS) Internet Explorer (IE) End of Support (EOS)

In August 2020, Microsoft announced they were retiring support for Internet Explorer (IE) for their Microsoft 365 tools (Microsoft Teams, Office365, etc.) which means that “customers will have a degraded experience or will be unable to connect to Microsoft 365 apps and services on IE 11”. They based their decision on changes in technology:

“Customers have been using IE 11 since 2013 when the online environment was much less sophisticated than the landscape today. Since then, open web standards and newer browsers—like the new Microsoft Edge—have enabled better, more innovative online experiences.”

In consultation with the Enterprise Infrastructure Solutions (EIS) vendors, the General Services Administration (GSA) has elected to modify the EIS contract to remove the requirement for the vendor Business Support Systems (BSS) to support full access via IE. This change will ensure vendors can maintain modern, up-to-date BSS tools.

Important Information for Agencies

This change removes the requirement to support IE but does not prohibit its use. Some vendors have indicated that they do not currently plan to retire support for IE even as the requirement is removed. Any agency that has a need to continue using IE should work with their vendor(s) to ensure their needs are met.
